Find yourself the right basketball coach

Importance to select a Right Coach for you

A coach does everything from assessing your natural skills, judging your weaknesses and doing everything that it takes to become a complete player. There are many aspects of the game one does cannot understand by being involved in it. One needs a bird-eye view of the game in order to improve on their performance. In most cases, a coach acts as that eye. So until you do not have the right coach, don’t even think of a future in the game.

So what should one look for in a basketball coach? The following are the three fundamentals, in a descending order of significance, of what you should look for in a coach.

  1. A thorough understanding of the game and players

This is by far the most important aspect of a coach. The coach must understand the game well and be able to implement this knowledge on the court. This includes the obvious knowledge of strategy, formations and player positions. However, what is more important is the ability to gauge the skill level of your team and make plans accordingly. Coaching for NBA will obviously not be the same of coaching for a school team. Sadly, when it comes to coaching, these lines are not as clear and defined as this. Remember that bully of a coach that never helped you enjoy the game? This is the result of the coach’s failure to assess what is required to develop each player.

  1. The coach’s teaching abilities

This is a more technical aspect of what one should look for in a coach. The coach should be able to communicate with each player on a personal basis. This is where a coach has to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each player thoroughly. The coach just have sound knowledge of formulating drills to help players improve their dribbling, passing, defending and shooting abilities. Then, of course, come the more complex skills in the game such as formation, movements, assists and other complicated plays. However, a coach should not jump to these nuances before helping players perfect their game.

  1. Coaching and strategizing

As mentioned earlier, strategizing and planning can only be executed if you have a team to take it forward. Having knowledge of really complex strategies and moves is of no use if you do not have the team to execute. This is where many coaches make a huge error in judgement. Even before they can help players master the basic skills, they push them into more complex aspects of the game. You need to find a coach who takes you through a gradual transformation rather than attempting to make you run before you can walk. At the end of the day, what happens on the field depends completely on the players and the moment.

However, many of us are caught whining about coaches who are too harsh or aggressive. Remember, basketball is a game that requires hard physical efforts. So if you are not ready to get in there with a bullish attitude, you rather be sitting on the benches. A coaches aggression should at as motivation to pump you up further and help you attempt to get better with each passing game. However, this does not mean you have to lay off on defence. Without a good defensive skill set, there is no way you can take the game home. So when you find the right coach, make sure you keep him.
