College basketball is a rage in America. Every American college student dreams on being on the college team. Naturally, not everybody makes it. The championships that take place at different times of the year, especially the March Madness super tournament, have students thronging to venues for a piece of action. Among all these, what is the role of coaches? How do they help in grooming and nurturing talent? According to a latest press release, coaches can make out the talent of a student in the very initial recruitment. This issue has come to light and has become the topic of discussion among everybody because of the high transfer rates that are being witnessed in college basketball.
There are a lot of people who support coaches because it is the duty of a coach to recruit the best in the team. So, they need to be honest and select only those who they think have the potential to win matches for the college. So, can they afford to take a soft path and think about keeping kids happy rather than eliminating them from the team for lack of satisfactory performance?
On the students’ part, the days seem to have changed. They seem to be favoring the coach and transferring to a different team. So, where is the college spirit? Where is the spirit of winning matches for the college? Or is it the other way round? Do coaches get students from other Universities to play for their teams? A lot of questions are being raised in the present times owing to the high transfer rate of college basketball players.
Take for instance, the case of Julius Mays. He shifted to Kentucky from Wright State on a one year contract. Although the Kentucky Wildcats are ecstatic at the new inclusion in their team, not everybody agrees that the move is good. The most displeased is May’s coach Joe Luce. He tweeted last night about his displeasure. He said that May would be a “bad fit” at Kentucky. He also said that the people out at University of Kentucky don’t know him. However, he did wish May luck. Nevertheless, he did say his mind by directly tweeting to Mays and saying that he was worried about the choice.
May has been an excellent player in the college basketball circuit. Luce, his previous coach has told the media that Mays would probably go to Purdue, as per his expectations. However, he was surprised that he opted to transfer to Kentucky and play under the tutelage of John Calipari. By the way, you cannot blame May for choosing the best because after the recent wins of his team and his prodigal coaching skills, John Calipari is indeed one of the best coaches there is in business.
Mays first began playing for the University of North Carolina state. He played with the NC state for a couple of years and then transferred over to Wright State. However, he had to sit out for a season according to NCAA guidelines. When he was back, he was back with a bang. He has been playing for the Raiders in the current academic year. He has scored 2.8 rebounds and 14.1 points. He has now transferred to Kentucky and can play for the team immediately.
For Kentucky, he has added strength in the backcourt where he will team up with Doron Lamb, Darius Miller and Marquis Teague. The Kentucky team has done exceptionally well this season and three of its key players, including Anthony Davis, have been chosen for NBA.
