NBA Lockout News - Disclaimer Of Interest Fiasco

The NBA lockout is still going strong with the cold hard realization that the 2011-2012 season is officially in jeopardy of being cancelled. The National Basketball Players Association ended the latest meeting with the NBA owners on Monday with a “disclaimer of interest” and explaining that the recent collective bargaining agreements are going nowhere. They have also stated that instead of going in circles at the negotiations table they would rather drop the union and have their lawyers take over in this situation that seems to not have an end in the foreseeable future.

This bold move made by the players may not be the smartest route to take according to David Stern. In fact the players’ choice to dissolve the union could postpone negotiations to a point where the cancellation of the entire 2011-2012 season would be definite.

Disclaimer Of Interest Explained

The Disclaimer of Interest issued by the NBA players union basically states that the union wants to disband so that each player can pursue anti-trust legal action against the NBA. The commissioner of the NBA, David Stern, was extremely angry over this new stance from the players in the NBA. This “Disclaimer of Interest” has definitely set negotiations back and destroyed any chance ending the NBA lock out during November, 2011.

It will probably hinder lockout talks during December as well so I do not think that the lockout will end in 2011. It was definitely a childish move in my opinion. They would rather file frivolous lawsuits that are doomed to fail than earn millions of dollars per year playing basketball? I thought that they loved the game and that their fans were their number one priority.

This latest development only strengthens the arguments I made in my post about what caused the NBA lockout. We can blame around 75% of this mess on player greed and stupidity. Another 15% can surly be attributed to owner greed and the remaining 10% is held by one man, David Stern.

If the players union disbands we might have another NBA lockout during the 2012 – 2013 season. Some basketball sports books have already started refunding NBA futures bets so that in itself is a pretty bad sign.

Luckily we can still bet on NCAA basketball games. I’ve actually found that it is much easier to find great lines when betting on college basketball compared to NBA basketball. If the NBA basketball lockout does not end soon I will certainly cancel every one of my pending NBA bets and focus entirely on NCAA and FIBA basketball betting.
