USA Basketball at the Olympics

Summer’s almost gone, and it’s been as filled with sports as it could have been. First the European Cup in soccer, where Spain has won yet another cup, proving that they are truly the masters of the game this generation. Then, it came time for the Olympics, which have just ended yesterday, and here it was the United States that pretty much destroyed the competition, winning 104 medals in total, with 46 of them being gold medals, and 29 bronze and silver medals.

Out of all of these events, you’re probably going to guess which one we’re interested in: basketball, of course! Starting on the 28th of July and until the 12th of August, basketball was the hottest game at the Olympics. The United States had qualified since 2010. The Olympians were then divided into two groups Group A, with the United States, Nigeria, Lithuania, Argentina, Tunisia and France at the starting line, and Group B, with Spain, Brazil, Australia, Russia, Great Britain and China).

The final standing after all was said and done was: United States for first place, winning gold (and not only in the men’s competition; they have also won in the women’s Olympics), Spain in second, and Russia in third place. Among the three, the US is the only team which won all of the games it disputed, while Spain won 5 and lost 3 and Russia won 6 and lost 2 of them.

The final game in the event put the United States against Spain, a powerful team on its own. After the four quarters were up, the US had won by 7 points (107-100), after winning 2 out of the 4 quarters (the second quarter ended with 31-24 in favor of Spain, while the third quarter ended as a tie, 24-24).

This is the fifteenth time that the United States have won gold in the Basketball Olympics, and the third time that Spain has won silver. For many of the fans and viewers from all around the world, this event was just an opportunity for the Americans to show that the NBA is number one for a reason, and they totally wiped out all competition. And if you look at their lineup – Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kevin Love and many of the other NBA superstars, it’s not hard to imagine what the best basketball competition in the world is. If you had bet on basketball and predicted the US’ win, you’d have made a ton of money by now!
